The issue.

Doncaster Racecourse in South Yorkshire is one of the oldest and largest centers for horse racing. Recently benefiting from a £34 million redevelopment, the course now features an impressive five story grandstand alongside a myriad of hospitality, conferencing, and family facilities.

As one of South Yorkshire’s most popular event venues, the racecourse needed an efficient and reliable system that could  satisfy the high demands placed on it at peak times when its existing age-expired boilers came to the end of their working life and needed an upgrade. However, faced with tight space and time constraints, the venue required a compact and readily available solution that could be installed at the busy racecourse with minimum delay.

The solution

Following a site visit to Doncaster Racecourse, Essex-based contractor ProRite Ltd turned to its local Hamworthy Heating representative, who proposed installing three vertically stacked Upton UF900-3 floor standing condensing boilers and a low loss header kit with a combined air and dirt separator. Each model delivers a total output of 900kW. Alfie Paradise, Operations Director at ProRite Ltd, commented:

"We’ve been working with Hamworthy for over ten years and have always received a great service. We chose the Upton for this particular project because of its compact, vertically stacked design. This decision enabled us to overcome tight space restrictions in the plant room at Doncaster Racecourse. Moreover, as the site had no existing heating, Hamworthy was able to provide us with a prompt and efficient service.”

Delivered fully assembled to the site for simple installation, the Hamworthy Heating Upton modular boiler with aluminum heat
exchanger provided a fitting solution that was able to make the best use of floor space in the plant room at Doncaster Racecourse. Furthermore, thanks to its lightweight construction, there was no need to utilise expensive cranes or other heavy lifting equipment during installation.

As one of the most compact boilers of its class, the 6-bar rated floor standing condensing Upton boiler range offers up to 97% gross seasonal efficiency and is available in 18 different models with outputs ranging from 100 to 1050kW.

A modulation of 5:1 per module (increasing to 15:1 in a three-high vertical stack) also allows closer control of the output. As a result, Doncaster Racecourse can expect to benefit from increased future savings on fuel bills and reduced emissions.

To ensure the new Upton modular boiler system was set up to achieve maximum efficiency, commissioning was also carried out by one of Hamworthy service engineers and now benefits from an extended 5 year warranty.

Following a successful installation, the plant room at Doncaster Racecourse now benefits from increased floor space, which makes it easier to access equipment. Pleased with the results, the venue is now benefiting from a modern, reliable and efficient heating system.
